Even in Hades hot 100+ degree temperatures, the Camaro ZL1 lapped an impressive five hours without missing a beat. The six speed manual mated to Chevy’s 650hp/650lb-ft LT-4 is an excellent combination for those of us who enjoy shifting our own gears while being hitched to one of the fastest road (and track) cars out there. Just as impressive was the neutral handling character, which allowed speeding on course on the verge of understeer all day, but never crossing that radius-expanding line. Of course, there was enough power on tap to create oversteer with the throttle at any time, but unless one called for this behavior, it was never a concern. All in all, I’d rate the ZL1 a remarkably reliable, predictable, and capable car for one to take to any road course. It is docile enough to please both, the novice who is still getting comfortable behind the wheel, as well as the more-experienced, who will undoubtedly be smitten with the car’s huge performance envelope. One more thing—the supercharged V8 damn sure sounds as cussword sexy as you think it does! It is a shame Chevrolet ceased producing such a wonderful tribute to one of America’s greatest takes on how to go fast around a track.
